COPD and COVID-19 – What You Should Know to Stay Safe and Fight the Infection Better

There is so much information available about the Coronavirus today that nearly everything we read seems like old news. Those who suffer from COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder must be very careful as this virus attacks the respiratory system. COPD sufferers, the elderly, small children and those with compromised respiratory systems, are at a high risk of infection and developing life-threatening complications.

Note: For up-to-date information about the Coronavirus pandemic in your region, please check your government’s website.

Here’s our specially curated list of questions and answers for those who suffer from COPD and what they should do in these trying times.

1. How is this virus transmitted?

The transmission of this virus is primarily through the respiratory system. Sufferers of COPD must know how the infection is spread to prevent exposure. This includes:

  • Through the air, when an infected person around you coughs or sneezes.
  • Through personal contact, if you shake hands with or hug an infected individual.
  • By touching items or objects that have been touched or sneezed upon by infected individuals.
2. How high are my chances of getting infected or getting ill and then recovering?

Although the chances of someone getting infected without physical contact is very low, but going by the official statistics released by MoHFW, the WHO and other institutions, nearly 80% of the people who contract this disease are near those who have already been infected. This includes people in our homes, neighbourhoods, markets and other places with mass gatherings.

3. Why am I at a higher risk compared to other people?

The Coronavirus primarily affects the respiratory system and causes respiratory distress to those suffering from advanced stages of the disease. If you are suffering from COPD, your respiratory system is already compromised, making you highly susceptible.

4. What are the symptoms of the Coronavirus?

Most of the symptoms of this disease will be similar to the symptoms of flu-like diseases. Please note that these symptoms may take up to 15 days to show up after getting infected. You may be completely asymptomatic, yet infected.

These symptoms include:

  •  Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Body aches
  • Dry cough
  • Difficulty breathing and severe respiratory distress in those who are critically ill
5. What can I do to avoid infection?

Here are some steps that you can take to avoid infection during these trying times:

  •  Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • Establish a hygiene regimen for those who come in and avoid physical contact.
  • Ensure home delivery of essentials and maintain a month’s supply of groceries and medication.
  • Sanitize or wash all the supplies you get.
  • Check your oxygen cylinders, your oxygen concentrator and sanitize the devices you use daily.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Wear a mask
  • Avoid contact with those who are sick.
  • Quit smoking if you have not already.
  • Cough into your elbow or cover your sneeze or cough with your hands.

Although not an exhaustive list, this will ensure that you can stay adequately protected and try to not contract this highly infectious disease. As long as the world does not get a vaccine, please remember that currently, prevention is the only cure. We at Sanrai are here to help you if you need any kind of assistance with our products.
